This month, we are focusing on a topic that’s in the public’s periphery at the moment, as well it should be. AI is already affecting many industries and will soon affect most, as the technology grows faster than anyone can harness or tame.
My buddy, colleague and business partner Dave Croasdell has some great insights into AI and how it can transform your business. He and I have traveled around the world, including Africa and Eastern Europe, teaching and mentoring entrepreneurs. Dave is also a charter board member of BizAssenmbly.org and brings a wealth of knowledge to startups like yours and mine.
I’ll be back next month to dive into product/service value, and how to increase yours. —Matt Westfield
The AI landscape is constantly evolving, with new tools and updated versions released almost daily. These tools use sophisticated and powerful concepts like neural networks, deep learning and natural language processing to help users explore virtually any problem domain. As a university professor who has worked with numerous business startups around the world for the past 15 years, I thought it would be interesting to explore how AI tools might help generate and grow business ventures. As with most problem-solving exercises, the effective use of generative AI begins with asking the right questions.
The greatest challenges to starting a business are universal: articulating and validating appropriate value propositions, securing funding, developing an effective team and useful partnerships, cultivating the first customers, evaluating competition and market opportunities, identifying critical gaps in business models and developing the appropriate infrastructure and operational strategies to find financial success. Business ventures that can navigate these challenges—with a lot of hard work and a good bit of luck—become successful startups. So how might generative AI assist hopeful business founders address these challenges? Let’s turn to ChatGPT to find out.
(Note: These responses are aggregations from several different prompts provided to ChatGPT. Despite the helpful insights they provide, it is still necessary to incorporate human judgement to discern meaningful responses.)

Although Chat GPT can be useful in helping to start and grow a business, as noted at the end of nearly every prompt provided to ChatGPT, AI is simply tool. It still requires human judgement. AI is not a substitute for critical thinking, human expertise or personalized advice. Consider consulting with business advisers or experts to conduct a thorough review of your business model for a more comprehensive assessment.
